Aqara FP400 Review: Is It Really Better Than the FP2?

The new Aqara FP400 Spatial Multi Sensor takes the idea behind the popular FP2 and makes some significant changes, including a new 60GHz mmWave radar, tracking for up to 10 people, a much larger detection area and, perhaps most importantly, a choice of Zigbee or Thread instead of Wi-Fi. But not everything has been upgraded. In this review, I’ve been testing the Aqara FP400 in my home to see how accurately it tracks people around a room, how well its new AI detection works, how reliable it is when you’re sitting completely still and what happens when you introduce pets, reflections and other things that can cause problems for mmWave presence sensors. I’ll also show you how the FP400 maps a room and creates individual detection zones, the settings available for fine tuning those zones, and the differences between using the sensor over Zigbee and Thread/Matter. And of course, we’ll try adding the FP400 directly to Home Assistant using Zigbee2MQTT to see exactly what works right now. Finally, I’ll compare the FP400 with the Aqara FP2, because although the new sensor improves person tracking, detection range and connectivity, there are also some FP2 features that have disappeared.
