What If AI Got Smarter and Never Stopped

What if AI kept getting smarter, and never stopped? You start on an ordinary city street, today. AI is about as smart as you: it drives the taxis, delivers your shopping and answers your questions. Then the first robots start walking among us. It passes Einstein. It starts improving its own code, and the days begin to fly by. Towers go up overnight, the cars turn into pods, and one by one every building becomes a computer. Then it needs more power, more metal, and more room... and it looks up. The ideas are real: self-driving taxis, delivery robots and humanoid robots already exist. An "intelligence explosion", an AI that improves itself faster and faster, is something many AI researchers take seriously. Space elevators, mining the Moon, and wrapping the Sun in a swarm of collectors (a Dyson swarm, first described by Freeman Dyson in 1960) are all real proposals. And a civilisation that spread from star to star at a tenth of the speed of light would cross the whole galaxy in about a million years. Some of it is not real: IQ can't actually measure anything past about 200. Here it is just a way to show how fast it grows.
