There’s a lot being said right now about foreigners in Kenya, especially after the government crackdown on foreign traders.
And honestly, I think we need to have this conversation without losing our heads.
If someone is in Kenya illegally or running a business without the required documents, then yes, the law should deal with that. But that doesn’t mean every foreigner you see is automatically the reason Kenyans are struggling?
We have unemployment. We have corruption. We have a high cost of living. We have young people struggling to find opportunities.
These problems did not start because a Burundian came to Kenya looking for a way to survive.
There’s a genuine conversation to be had about immigration, foreign traders, and protecting opportunities for Kenyans. But when that conversation turns into blaming an entire nationality, we need to ask ourselves where we’re heading.
South Africa has already shown us how economic frustration can turn into xenophobia.
Kenya needs to be careful.
