Join me for a morning at a sheep dairy farm where I work part-time doing chores, milking the sheep, and caring for the flock. This farm is located in eastern Ontario, Canada. Although my professional background is in graphic design and illustration, I have been increasingly drawn to farm work. I find it extremely rewarding to work with my hands and see progress unfold — be it in weeding a row of veggies or working with animals. When I developed a number of food allergies over a decade ago, I was no longer able to maintain a vegan or vegetarian diet. This led to a search for sustainable, ethical farms where animals were seen as individuals, not just as a commodity. I met the couple who runs this sheep dairy as neighbour market vendors about 14 years ago. We became fast friends. Seeing the care, compassion, and dignity with which they raise their sheep was wonderful. Several years ago, they asked if I would be interested in becoming their first employee. I jumped at the chance. Now, I work at the sheep farm a few days a week during milking season (early June through to early October). Here is a sped up walk through of some of the work I do at the farm. I'll be sharing more videos on this channel with narration about life on the farm, the ecology that the rotational grazing supports, and hopefully some how-it's-made videos about the cheese making process! They will all be in the Life on a Sheep Farm playlist. Thanks for watching!
