Croc country swamps, black soil that swallows a 79 Series and a Holroyd River crossing cut open with a chainsaw. Shaun Whale and Graham Cahill run west to east across remote Cape York.
A trip that's been on the whiteboard for over a decade. 400km of low range from Pormpuraaw on Cape York's west coast to the east coast, following the Holroyd River the whole way, on tracks nobody has driven in decades — and half of it nobody is certain has ever been driven at all.
An early June start after a late wet means water everywhere. Salt pans that are normally bone dry are full, and the black soil underneath the crust will take a 4WD to the chassis rails in seconds. Shaun Whale is in the Mits Alloy 79 Series, Graham Cahill is behind the wheel of the Mazda BT50, and Tony, Tim and Pete round out the convoy in an 80 Series on 35s, a TB48 Patrol and an Ultimate 9 GU. Ten bog holes on day one. A chainsaw run to open a crossing the river has erased. A drone up to find a track that's completely invisible from behind the windscreen. Airing down to 16-18psi to float the river sand. A first barramundi, a dingo on the salt flats, and a bird-eating spider's nest nobody wants to put a finger in.
Then the soil turns. Winch, reset, repeat — three hours in one spot, then five in another, with rig after rig going down. Shauno also runs through the 100Ah lithium setup that keeps the 75L dual zone fridge and the roof-mounted Starlink alive, the spare parts box that lives on the roof, and why an IP67-sealed winch is the one thing you don't gamble on out here. This is Part 1, and we won't spoil where it ends up — but paradise is still a long way east. Part 2 lands next week.
