Queen Sonja Waited 9 Years — The King Harald V Refused to Marry Anyone Else

The fairy tale says love beat the snobs. The constitution says one signature was missing for nine years. There was no law against a commoner bride. Article 36 required only the King’s consent. King Olav withheld it. In 1964 the palace denied a marriage it would announce four years later — and still would not print her name. Harald later put the hinge in one sentence: if he could not marry Sonja Haraldsen, he would remain unmarried. Under the rules then in force he was the entire line of succession. An unmarried heir did not hand the throne to someone else. It stopped the dynasty. On 19 March 1968 Olav consented.
