How do we raise true Kenyan patriots? In this podcast episode, we tackle two core shifts transforming education in Kenya: Literature as a tool for teaching patriotism and the evolving role of parents under CBE (Competency-Based Education).
We compare how national pride and civic duty were taught under the old 8-4-4 system versus how the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC / CBE) approaches them today, both inside the classroom and at home.
Key Discussion Points
1. Literature as a Tool for Patriotism (8-4-4 vs. CBE)
8-4-4 System: Patriotism was explored through intense thematic analysis of compulsory set books (Betrayal in the City, The River and the Source, Blossoms of the Savannah). Students learned national identity, history, and civic critique by studying struggle, power, and state leadership on paper to pass national exams.
CBE Model: CBE shifts patriotism from passive set-book analysis to active, practical demonstration. National values, heritage, and civic responsibility are integrated directly into performance tasks, creative writing, and Community Service Learning (CSL) projects.
2. The Evolving Role of Parents in CBE
8-4-4 System: A largely "hands-off" approach where parents provided school fees, uniforms, and textbooks, while leaving character building, value teaching, and political awareness almost entirely to teachers.
CBE Model: Parent Empowerment and Engagement is explicitly designed as a central pillar of learning. Under CBE, parents step into the role of co-educators and mentors—guiding value-based activities, assisting with practical project-based homework, and actively reinforcing national pride through daily, home-based civic engagement.
