Two doctors who fought for Paitin Fields' life tell the jury what happened to her was no accident. Neither one can tell them who did it. Paitin Fields was five years old when her uncle, David Prevatte, carried her into the Pender Memorial emergency room in Burgaw, North Carolina, in November 2017. He was named a suspect in 2018 and not charged until 2022. Now the uncle on trial sits in Pender County Superior Court, charged in her death and with other charges, and he is presumed innocent. Day 1, after the morning recess: the ER physician who treated her, then the pediatric ICU doctor in Wilmington. Dr. Brian McGrath remembers the night "very clearly." She arrived at 3:50 a.m., "a profoundly sick girl," and his team worked to keep her alive. Asked if he believed she would survive, he says, "I prayed that she would survive." Dr. Michael Stoiko, who ran the pediatric ICU at New Hanover Regional, puts it plainest: "Somebody did this to her." Here is what I want you watching. Both doctors answer HOW, and both are certain. Neither answers WHO, and that is the only question this jury has to decide. On a short cross, the defense gets the ER doctor to say he has no "insight or evidence" about what caused the mark he saw. Hold that next to the State's promise from the openings. And for the record: the court ordered the State's photographs kept off the broadcast, and before lunch both sides said some were visible on camera anyway. Our copy blurs that moment. --- WATCH WITH JUSTICE 0:00:00 What this video is, and a preview 0:00:20 Intro 0:01:19 to 0:07:38 - Video starts: The State calls Dr. Brian McGrath, the emergency physician on duty at Pender Memorial that night. He is accepted as an expert in emergency medicine. 0:07:38 to 0:16:38 - The night she came in. He remembers the uncle banging on the back door, "a profoundly sick girl," and reads his own ER note. 0:16:38 to 0:23:19 - She got the same care she would have gotten in Wilmington, he says. Then his findings, and why, after "70,000 patients," he ruled out every other explanation. 0:23:19 to 0:28:59 - The State's photographs come in, and the court orders them kept off the broadcast. He walks the jury through them. Our copy blurs the seconds the screen was in frame. 0:28:59 to 0:34:12 - Did he believe she would survive? "I prayed that she would survive." He tells jurors no disease or infection explains what he saw, and that he believes it was non-accidental. 0:34:12 to 0:38:45 - The defense's short cross. He has no "insight or evidence" about what caused the mark, and he ran every infection test because "we didn't want to leave any stone unturned." 0:38:45 to 0:48:23 - Dr. Michael Stoiko, forty years in pediatric critical care. He has testified in "almost a hundred cases of child abuse." 0:48:23 to 1:02:35 - McGrath's call, a helicopter grounded by weather, and her arrival by ground. His exam, and his conclusion: "Somebody did this to her." 1:02:35 to 1:10:31 - What happened over the next hours. He rules out a near-drowning, "Not even close," and walks through the coma scale and the brain wave readings. 1:10:31 to 1:15:28 - He could not see the photos well in court, so the State admits 19 more. Before lunch, both sides put on the record that some photos were visible on camera. CASE BACKGROUND REPORT: https://justiceisaprocess.com/nc-v-da...
