Alexander Goehr (1932–2024)
Double Chaconne with Gaps, for ensemble, op. 104 (2019)
Talea Ensemble
Susanne Blumenthal, conductor
World Première, 15 October 2022, Donaueschinger Musiktage '22
Just under fifty years ago I wrote my Pastorals for Donaueschingen. It was then the high point of serial thinking. I asked a player in what was then the Südwestfunk Orchestra to play a phrase more expressively. "In this orchestra", he replied, "we only play loud or soft." My love for (Bachian) formal structures has remained with me since then, though much else has developed and changed.
Double Chaconne with Gaps was written in 2019. It consists of 29 variants of the two alternating Chaconnes, the one identified by harp and piano (with strings and percussion), the other darker with alto flute, bass clarinet, horn and double bass. Later in the piece the two combine and overlap. Why Gaps? I am fascinated by the way the Japanese painter Hokusai, in late work, began with a space in the blank paper and defined it with shape and image. Here, silence and sound transpose this idea; I’m not sure with success.
