After taking a train from the capital, I arrived in Ipoh for the first time. During the colonial era, large numbers of Chinese laborers came here to develop the tin-mining industry. Ipoh Railway Station is a century-old building, often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Malaysia.” Walking through the old town feels almost like stepping back into the 1990s. It seems as though both time and the economy have stood still, leaving the streets much as they were decades ago. Religious slogans are spray-painted throughout the streets.
