In the summer of 1940, at the height of the Battle of Britain, Hermann Göring asked Adolf Galland what his squadron needed. According to Galland's own account, he answered: Spitfires. Four years later, an Allied fighter helped end the Luftwaffe's control of the sky over Germany. In this video: the Schweinfurt raids and Black Thursday, the idea of unescorted daylight bombing, the P-51 Mustang and its British Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, General Doolittle's decision to send fighters on the offensive, Big Week, the first big daylight raid on Berlin, the loss of Germany's pilots and fuel, Operation Bodenplatte, and why historians say the Mustang was only part of the story. Did one weapon decide the air war over Germany, or was the Luftwaffe already doomed by numbers, fuel and leadership? Tell me what you think in the comments. 📚 Sources: Adolf Galland, The First and the Last (1953) [add the other books and sources you used] If you enjoy stories of the machines and decisions that shaped history, subscribe so you don't miss the next one. #P51Mustang #Luftwaffe #WW2 #AviationHistory #MilitaryHistory
