A crumbling farmhouse in Shropshire hides a medieval gatehouse with secrets that upend the story locals thought they knew. When Time Team arrives, a grand arch, a puzzling oriel, and a flood of clues hint at a manor shaped by crisis and comeback.
Across three days, the team chases hard evidence: dendro dates from the gatehouse timbers falling between 1341 and 1352, a 15th century smoke-blackened roof beam reused in a chimney, and a mason’s distinctive Z mark linking scattered phases. A culvert that feels more monastery than manor, a lord’s private garderobe, and fish ponds that challenge the long-held “moat” idea all point to an elite water system hiding in plain sight. But how do Alan de Charlton and Marjorie Fitzair, and the shock of the Black Death, fit into the puzzle? And what exactly did the first-phase oriel look like?
Watch as trenches, geophysics and tree-ring cores piece together a two-phase build, a display landscape, and a manor that may never have truly been “finished.” Dive in to see which myths survive the dig.
