In December 1997, the Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned, and its immaculate white-enamelled engine room went entirely silent. For over forty years, its bespoke John Brown-Pametrada steam turbines pushed the vessel across a million nautical miles without a single mechanical failure. But while the 12,000-horsepower twin sets represented the absolute pinnacle of British maritime engineering and Clyde-built precision, they were ultimately defeated by the harsh economics of the late twentieth century. In this documentary, we explore the origins of Britannia's vibrationless steam plant, the extreme culture of the Royal Navy engineers who maintained it, and why this flawless mechanical masterpiece became too expensive to survive in a modern diesel world. Discover the story of the last perfect British marine engine.
