Turn your phone screen off and look at it. That face in the dark glass is something almost nobody in history could see clearly. So who made the first mirror, and how did we go from a puddle to a pane of glass on every wall? The oldest mirrors we know of were black volcanic glass, buried with the dead in a Turkish town about 8,000 years ago.
In this video: why still water was the first mirror, the obsidian mirrors of Çatalhöyük, polished copper in Egypt, bronze and "magic" mirrors in China, mirrors in the ancient Americas, why the story of Archimedes burning a fleet has never held up, how Venice built the glass mirror, how France got the secret, the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, how silvering and aluminium coating changed everything, the mirror test that shows which animals recognise themselves, the real story behind "seven years of bad luck", how mirror-makers were poisoned by mercury, and the villages that now use giant mirrors to bring sunlight into winter shadow.
