Some medieval castles were protected by more than walls: cliffs, mountains, and paths designed to make an army give up before the real fight began. But which fortresses truly held, and which stories were polished long after the siege? From Hochosterwitz Castle and Burg Eltz to Sigiriya, Quéribus Castle, and Masyaf Castle, these ten medieval fortresses were built where reaching the gate was already a military operation. We climb toward Daulatabad Fort, Chittorgarh Fort, Kerak Castle, Krak des Chevaliers, and Chihaya Castle to see how height, rock, narrow approaches, and layered defenses changed the odds of war. Along the way, we examine Hochosterwitz's famous ox story, the mountain strongholds of the Middle East and Asia, and the castles that held or fell when armies finally found a way in. We separate stone, siege records, and later legends—including the stories that appeared in writing centuries after the events. Every episode of this channel is researched, written and fact-checked by hand from the sources below; the artwork is drawn for this channel in our own style, and the narration is synthesized. Where the historical record is disputed — or a story is legend rather than record — we say so in the video instead of quietly repeating it.
