In this powerful six-minute film, Lucy, Bridgette and Tracy share the realities of life after childhood and adolescent cancer, the ongoing physical, emotional and practical effects that can continue long after treatment ends. They are joined by Professor Brendan Murphy AC and Dr Udani Reets from Children’s Cancer CoLab, who explain why survival is only part of the story and why Australia needs a more coordinated approach to survivorship research. Surviving Cancer Is Not Enough calls for research shaped by lived experience: research that identifies unmet needs, addresses gaps and inequities, tests better approaches, and builds the evidence, data and tools needed to improve lifelong outcomes. This is a call for coordinated research and innovation—not funding for another disconnected service.
