Environmental DNA is often considered a first-choice tool for aquatic systems. DNA in aquatic environments can provide rich insights into species presence and diversity with high sensitivity. However, in terrestrial systems, eDNA applications can be more complex.
DNA doesn't disperse in terrestrial environments as freely as water bodies. Locating target DNA can present significant sampling challenges, and the process often requires a more targeted approach, often alongside other *survey techniques for terrestrial macrofauna, such as observations, camera traps, and acoustic monitoring.
So, where does eDNA fit in?
The answer varies based on your target species and specific survey question. There are many cases where conventional terrestrial techniques aren’t effective or feasible. This is where incorporating eDNA into your monitoring toolkit can be beneficial. It can either serve as a substitute for traditional techniques or complement them effectively. In addition, the importance of soil micro-biome is increasingly being recognised and may be used as an ecosystem health indicator.

Josh Griffiths brings over 20 years of experience in Australian fauna field surveys and is a leading expert in platypus conservation, dedicating more than 15 years to research. At EnviroDNA, Josh designs, leads, and advises on strategic eDNA surveys, using his skills in data analysis, interpretation, and communication to deliver valuable insights to clients.
Isaac is a wetland ecologist specialising in avian assemblages and monitoring threatened species. He has recently completed a Master of Bioscience where his project focused on optimising eDNA field and laboratory detection methods for the critically endangered Australasian bittern. At EnviroDNA, Isaac brings his expertise in end-to-end eDNA project design, spanning fieldwork and molecular genetics to inform best-practice survey protocols.
