“Be strong and courageous.”
Joshua 1:9 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible. We put it on shirts, coffee mugs, wall art, and use it as encouragement whenever someone is facing something difficult.
But when we isolate Joshua 1:9 from the rest of Joshua 1, it's easy to miss where Joshua's courage was actually supposed to come from.
God wasn't simply telling Joshua to believe in himself, overcome his fear, or somehow manufacture more courage.
Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses, preparing to lead Israel into the Promised Land, and facing a responsibility that was far bigger than himself. God's response wasn't merely, “Be brave.”
In this study, we walk through Joshua 1 and look at the relationship between courage, obedience, God's Word, and God's presence, and why the context changes the way we should understand one of Scripture's most familiar verses.
In this episode:
• What is actually happening when God speaks Joshua 1:9
• Why “be strong and courageous” isn't simply motivational advice
• The connection between courage and obedience
• Why God repeatedly tells Joshua to meditate on His Word
• Where Joshua's confidence was actually supposed to come from
• What Joshua 1 means for us today
