How did ancient humans stay clean before soap existed? For hundreds of thousands of years there was no soap at all, and when people finally invented it, they used it on wool, not on themselves.
In this animated history, we look at how our ancestors really kept clean: scrubbing with sand, clay and wet ash, washing with plants that foam on their own, oiling the body and scraping the dirt off with a strigil like the Romans, and fighting lice with combs. Along the way: why body odor is partly in your genes, what a 3,700-year-old ivory comb says, and why soap took thousands of years to reach the human body.
