4K HDR - Aerial Drone - Glacial Shadows: Rakaia River Beauty in Winter - Canterbury, South Island

Filming the Rakaia River by drone mid-winter after a fresh snowfall is inspiring. The contrast between bright, sunlit white snow and the deep/turquoise blue river channels on a clear morning is superb. Filmed 26 July 2026 with DJI Air 3S wide-angle (24mm) camera. Enjoy:) The main source of the Rakaia River is meltwater from the Lyell and Ramsay Glaciers high in the Southern Alps - about 150 kilometers inland from the Canterbury coast. The bright blue colour comes from tiny rock pieces called glacial flour which is the result of moving ice grinding the bedrock into a very fine powder. This fine rock dust (suspended sediment) washes into the river and floats in the current. When sunlight hits these floating particles, it bounces back blue and green light waves, giving the water a striking turquoise look. In 1988, the Rakaia became New Zealand's second waterway – and the first in Canterbury – to be subject to a water conservation order.
