What did Jesus mean in the story of Lazarus and the rich man? Luke 16 is often treated as one of the clearest descriptions of conscious torment after death, but does that interpretation agree with what Scripture says about Sheol, Hades, resurrection, and judgment? In this episode, we compare the story with the Old Testament picture of Sheol and Jesus’ own teaching about resurrection on the day of judgment. Throughout Scripture, the contrast is repeatedly between death and eternal life: the wicked perish, while eternal life is the gift of God through Christ. That raises an important question about Luke 16. Is Jesus describing a literal place of conscious torment, or is He using familiar imagery to make a different point? We then look at the surrounding parables in Luke 15 and 16, the Pharisees Jesus was addressing, and first-century beliefs about the afterlife to consider whether Jesus was describing the afterlife literally or using a familiar story against the Pharisees themselves. From there, we examine the rich man as a picture of apostate Israel, Lazarus as representing the Gentiles, and Abraham’s side as a picture of sharing in the promise given to Abraham through faith. The conclusion is that Jesus was not revealing a place of eternal torture. He was warning the Pharisees about the coming reversal brought by the gospel and the fiery judgment Jerusalem would face. The biblical contrast remains life and death: eternal life in Christ or perishing apart from Him. Read the companion study and continue the conversation: https://wakinguptograce.com/016-etern...
