Leaving the interior plains of Extremadura, the route begins a decisive shift in terrain. Here, the Iberian Peninsula rises into its central mountain system — the Cordillera Central — forming a natural barrier between regions and reshaping movement, climate, and visibility. Crossing the Puerto de Tornavacas marks both a physical and regional transition. At over 1,200 meters in elevation, the pass separates Extremadura from Castilla y León and closes the Jerte Valley, opening instead toward higher ridges, alpine basins, and long mountain corridors. Vegetation shifts visibly, with Spanish broom and pine forests giving way to high-altitude grasslands. At the northern foot of the range, the route pauses briefly at El Barco de Ávila, where the medieval Castillo de Valdecorneja overlooks the valley of the Tormes River. This fortified town represents a transitional interface between interior valleys and the mountain core beyond. The episode then moves decisively upward into the heart of the Sierra de Gredos, the highest and most alpine segment of the Cordillera Central. Establishing a base camp within the pine forest zone, the route shifts from vehicular movement to direct engagement with the terrain. Ascending from the Plataforma de Gredos, the landscape transitions through clear altitudinal zones — forest, shrub, alpine grassland — toward the glacial basin beneath Pico Almanzor, the highest summit of the range. Snowfields, meltwater streams, and exposed rock define an alpine environment unexpected in central Iberia. The hike culminates at Laguna Grande de Gredos, a high-mountain cirque lake formed by past glaciation. From here, the terrain reveals its full structure: steep enclosing walls, glacial valleys, and limited access routes — a true alpine core embedded within the peninsula. Within Crossing Eurasia, Sierra de Gredos represents a major physical threshold. It interrupts east–west movement, concentrates elevation and climate extremes, and forces adaptation in route planning, marking the transition from interior plateaus toward the highlands surrounding Madrid. Crossing Eurasia is a long-distance overland project based on physical geography and continuous movement across the Eurasian landmass, treating landscapes and settlements as terrain-driven nodes rather than touristic destinations. This video is part of Season 1, documenting the shift from interior plains into the alpine systems of central Spain. The route continues toward Ávila and the approaches to Madrid, where elevation and human fortification intersect once again.
