Hey guys 👋
In this video, I’ve explained VS Code + Icarus Verilog installation step by step in a very simple and beginner-friendly way.
If you are learning Verilog / RTL / VLSI and feel that Vivado is too heavy or confusing, this video is for you.
In this video, we set up a complete Verilog simulation environment from scratch — VS Code, Icarus Verilog, and GTKWave — everything you need to start writing, compiling, and simulating Verilog code on your own system.
Whether you're a beginner in digital design, an ECE/EE student, or prepping for VLSI interviews, having a working simulation toolchain is the first step before you can practice RTL coding, FSMs, testbenches, and waveform analysis.

00:12 Setup Process begins
00:20 Installing VS Code
01:52 Installing Icarus Verilog
02:31 Installing GTKWave
04:15 Testing setup
05:00 Viewing waveforms in GTKWave
🛠️ Tools covered:
VS Code (with Verilog extension)
Icarus Verilog (iverilog + vvp)
GTKWave (waveform viewer)
This setup works for Windows, and the same tools carry over to Linux/macOS with minor path differences.
If you're following along for VLSI/Verilog interview prep, this is the exact environment you'll want for practicing coding problems like FSMs, counters, and testbenches.
