The Location Summary
Built in 1883 by attorney Edgar J. Webster, the Minnehaha stone building began as a private summer home. By the 1890s, Webster converted it into a luxurious mineral springs health spa and resort, complete with a hotel, athletic clubs, a zoo, and a direct electric rail line from downtown Spokane. Today, the surviving stone structure sits inside Minnehaha Park and is a famous local landmark.
The Supposed Hauntings
Because of its eerie, abandoned look, the stone house has become a magnet for paranormal claims:
• Ghostly Children: The most common report involves the sounds of disembodied children. Visitors claim to hear phantom laughter, crying, whispering, and small footsteps echoing from the empty stone structure.
• The "Orphanage" Legend: Local folklore falsely claims the building was once an asylum or an orphanage that burned down, trapping children inside—this legend is heavily used to explain why the ghosts of children are heard there.
• The Lady in White: Some paranormal investigators have reported seeing a faint, glowing female figure walking the surrounding park trails or standing near the stone windows at night.
• Sudden Cold Spots: Visitors exploring the immediate area outside the stone walls frequently report sudden, unexplainable drops in temperature and an intense feeling of being watched.
