The 1897 edition of “Hymns of the Christian Life” includes a Preface that begins with the following words: “The musical taste of our day is in a state of transition… the people WILL have new tunes and hymns that move in a more spirited time than those which our fathers sang.”
These observations were true then and remain relevant today. The hymns of A. B. Simpson have been bringing the message of Christ as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King into the pews of Alliance churches for well over 130 years. Among the most enduring of hymnals is the 1936 edition, commonly referred to as “The Blue Hymnal,” which many Alliance churches used well into the 1970s.
However, with the rising use of audio-visual technology in most Alliance churches, the hymnal has nearly disappeared, seemingly taking Simpson's hymns along with it. The BLUE HYMNAL SIMPSON series represents an effort to faithfully place Simpson’s lyrics into the “new tunes” of our day, allowing the heart and passion of Simpson to be expressed through music once again.

"Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then is there no healing for the wound of my people?" — Jeremiah 8:22
In ancient times, the region of Gilead was famous for producing a special, rare medicine. It was a soothing ointment, or "balm," made from the sap of local trees. People traveled from all over to buy it because it had the power to heal deep wounds and soothe terrible pain.
In this Bible verse, the prophet Jeremiah is looking at his nation, which is completely broken by sin and suffering. Heartbroken, he asks a famous question: "Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there?" He knew the physical medicine was there, but he was mourning because the people’s hearts and souls were still deeply wounded. They were suffering because they had walked away from God, the only true Doctor who could fix them.
A. B. Simpson looked at this same verse and realized something wonderful. He taught that through Jesus Christ, Jeremiah's sad question has finally been answered with a loud, triumphant "Yes!"
Simpson taught that Jesus is our Great Physician. He didn't just come to forgive our sins and take us to heaven one day; He also cares deeply about our pain, our sickness, and our broken hearts right now. In this hymn, Simpson declared: "Yes, there's balm in Gilead; There's a Great Physician here!"
When we are hurting physically, emotionally, or spiritually, we don’t have to suffer alone. We don't have to wonder if help is available. Jesus is ready to pour His soothing, healing love into our lives. We simply need to stop trying to fix ourselves and bring our wounds to Him.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the Great Physician who cares about every single one of our hurts. Forgive us for the times we try to carry our pain, stress, or sickness all by ourselves. We bring our wounds to You, believing that there is still a healing balm available through Your love. Please soothe our hearts, heal our bodies, and fill us with Your perfect peace. In the Name of our Great Physician, Jesus, Amen.
BALM IN GILEAD
As I sadly look around me,
O'er a world of grief and woe,
Oh, the hearts that break with anguish,
Oh, the bitter tears that flow;
And I sometimes almost wonder,
Is there none to help or care?
And you'll find there's balm in Gilead,
There's a great Physician there.
Yes, there's balm, there's balm in Gilead;
There's a great Physician there,
Let us bring Him all our sickness;
Cast upon Him all our care.
There is healing in the Promise,
There is healing in the Blood,
There is strength for all our weakness
In the Risen Son of God.
And the feeblest of His children
All His glorious life may share,
He has better balm in Gilead;
He's the Great Physician there.
Yes, there's balm, there's balm in Gilead;
There's a great Physician there,
Let us bring Him all our sickness;
Cast upon Him all our care.
Would you prove this Great Physician,
You must do what He commands;
Carefully obey His orders;
Lie submissive in His hands.
You must trust without a question;
Cast upon Him every care,
And you'll find there's balm in Gilead,
There's a great Physician there.
Yes, there's balm, there's balm in Gilead;
There's a great Physician there,
Let us bring Him all our sickness;
Cast upon Him all our care.
Yes, there's balm, there's balm in Gilead;
There's a great Physician there,
Let us bring Him all our sickness;
Cast upon Him all our care.
