Episode # 5608 NOW A BRIEF WORD
Original airdate: 9-30-56
An attractive copywriter for a local radio station (played by Loretta Young) finds herself in a big dilemma when she is faced with the task of writing speeches for opposing mayoral candidates.
Penny Evans sells herself first on one candidate, then the other, and finally becomes convinced that both men deserve to be elected mayor. Which one should win the vote? Things resolve happily only after the citizens cast their ballots.
Al Kiner, candidate number one, is played by Mike Connors... who is credited here as "Touch Connors"... his nickname. Connors was an Armenian-American actor whose career spanned six decades and was best known for playing private detective Joe Mannix in the CBS television series Mannix from 1967–75,
He also starred in the short-lived series Tightrope! (1959–60) and Today's FBI (1981-82). Connors died in Tarzana, California, a week after being diagnosed with leukemia on January 26, 2017, at the age of 91.
Candidate number two, Jake Alberts, is portrayed by Raymond Greenleaf, best known for appearances in films like All the King's Men (1949), Angel Face (1952), and Pinky (1949). He played in over fifty films and television programs, and died on 29 October 1963 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California and is buried at Oakwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Chatsworth, California
Trivia facts: The picture Penny Evans shows of her son at six minutes, forty-three seconds into the program is an actual photo of one of her real-life sons, Peter Lewis. The director of this episode, Norman Foster, was Miss Young's brother-in-law, married to her sister Sally Blane.
Directed by Norman Foster; written by Lowell Hawley.
