Lucy Thomas is back on the channel, this time with “Hallelujah.”
After hearing her version of “I Will Always Love You,” I was really curious to hear Lucy in a song that demands something completely different. “Hallelujah” is not really about showing off range or producing the biggest belt possible. It rewards restraint, phrasing, breath control, dynamics, and the ability to make repeated melodic material feel emotionally different each time.
One of the things I was listening for was Lucy’s lower and middle register. Her upper voice has that beautiful, bright lyric soprano quality, but this song spends a lot of time in a range where she has to create interest through tone, phrasing, and interpretation instead.
I also wanted to see whether she could increase the emotional intensity without simply getting louder. Can she make a later phrase feel bigger through resonance, vowel shape, breath, and delivery rather than just adding volume?
And with a song that has been covered this many times, there is one huge question:
Can Lucy Thomas make me forget that I’ve already heard “Hallelujah” hundreds of times?
Let me know what you heard, and tell me which Lucy Thomas performance needs to be next.
