On the morning of the disaster, automated software logged the signal as a magnitude 4.4 earthquake. It was not an earthquake. The USGS reclassified event us7000tbwb as a landslide, magnitude 5.2 at a depth of zero, and Germany's GFZ Helmholtz Centre independently solved the same instant at 5.2 to 5.7. What came off Langtang Lirung ran roughly 62 miles down the Lhende Khola and the Trishuli, took out dozens of bridges and tens of miles of highway, knocked 431 megawatts of hydropower off Nepal's grid, and buried the Rasuwagadhi crossing into Tibet. More than 700 people are confirmed dead, roughly 2,500 are missing, and the U.S. State Department has at least 90 missing Americans on its list. Every headline said glacier collapse. The researchers most of those headlines quote have since revised that.
