The Denisovans Are Weirder Than You Think

Look at the tip of your little finger. In 2008, in a cave in Siberia, a chip of finger bone smaller than a coin revealed a whole lost kind of human: the Denisovans. For years they had no skull, no skeleton and no face. Just a fingertip, a few teeth, and a genome. Yet a little of their DNA may be inside you right now. They met Neanderthals and had a child with them. They met our ancestors too. One of their genes helps people breathe on the roof of the world.
