Summary & Description of Luke 7:36–50 This passage tells the story of Jesus being anointed by a sinful woman in the house of a Pharisee named Simon. 1. Invitation to Dinner (v. 36–37) A Pharisee (Simon) invites Jesus to eat at his house. While there, a woman from the city, known as a sinner (often understood as living a sinful lifestyle), comes in with an alabaster jar of perfume. 2. Act of Devotion (v. 38) The woman stands behind Jesus weeping. She washes His feet with her tears, wipes them with her hair, kisses them, and anoints them with the perfume. This is a deep act of humility, love, and repentance. 3. The Pharisee’s Reaction (v. 39) Simon the Pharisee thinks to himself, “If this man were a prophet, He would know who this woman is and what kind of sinner she is.” He silently doubts Jesus’ authority and holiness. 4. Jesus’ Parable of the Two Debtors (v. 40–43) Jesus tells a short parable: two men owed money, one a large debt and one a small debt. Both were forgiven by the lender. Jesus asks Simon: “Which one will love the lender more?” Simon answers: “The one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” Jesus affirms that he judged correctly. 5. Application to the Woman (v. 44–47) Jesus contrasts Simon’s lack of hospitality (no water for His feet, no kiss of greeting, no oil for His head) with the woman’s actions (washing His feet with tears, kissing them, and anointing them). Jesus explains that her many sins are forgiven because she loved much. Simon, however, showed little love, revealing a lack of awareness of his own need for forgiveness. 6. Forgiveness Declared (v. 48–50) Jesus tells the woman: “Your sins are forgiven.” The other guests are shocked: “Who is this that even forgives sins?” Jesus assures the woman: “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” --- Meaning & Lessons Forgiveness is available to all, no matter how great the sin. True love for Jesus flows from recognizing how much we’ve been forgiven. Religious pride (like Simon’s) can blind us to our own need for mercy. Jesus has authority to forgive sins, confirming His divine role. God values a humble, repentant heart more than outward appearances. --- Would you like me to also give you a short devotional-style reflection on how this passage applies to life today?
