You leave the ten pin standing way too much, and you struggle to pick it up. If you keep missing spares after sixty, it is not your eyes. From where you stand, the ten pin looks as thin as a matchstick, but your ball can knock it down anywhere across a strip about thirteen inches wide. So when you miss it, you miss by a whole foot. Your eyes did not do that, and neither did your age. I grew up in a bowling alley outside Columbus and bowled tournaments without ever being the one who threw it hardest, and I still cashed, again and again, because I did not miss spares. Here is the spare system I learned from a PBA Tour player's lesson, and almost everything in it costs nothing. At the end, the one thing to do before you even take a step, that finally puts the ten pin down.
00 The ten pin you keep leaving
40 Your target is thirteen inches wide
16 Why your hook misses single pins
20 Throw your corner pins straight
00 Where your eyes are when you let go
03 One target for every spare
19 Where your slide foot stops
51 The ten pin, and the piece I saved for last
💬 When you leave a single pin standing, which one is it, the ten pin or the seven pin? And when you look down after your next spare shot, what board is your slide foot sitting on? Write the pin and the board in the comments below. I read them, and I would love to know.
