TEXAS – Ally & Sharleen Interview | Wide Awake Club (WAC) | Tommy Boyd | 4th February 1989 | Betamax Archive
A rare television interview featuring Ally McErlaine and Sharleen Spiteri of Scottish rock band Texas, interviewed by television presenter Tommy Boyd for the popular UK children's television programme Wide Awake Club (WAC) on 4th February 1989.
This vintage interview captures Texas during the early stages of their career, around the time their debut album Southside was released. The band would go on to become one of Scotland's most successful musical exports, known for their distinctive blend of rock, blues, pop and soulful vocals.
Fronted by Sharleen Spiteri, with guitarist Ally McErlaine, Texas first came to widespread attention with their breakthrough single “I Don't Want a Lover” in 1989. The song introduced audiences to the band's blues-influenced guitar sound and Sharleen's distinctive voice, helping establish Texas as a major name in British music.
Presented by Tommy Boyd, Wide Awake Club was a familiar programme for young UK television viewers in the late 1980s. This interview offers a fascinating glimpse into British television and the early history of Texas, before the band went on to achieve international success with songs including “Say What You Want”, “Summer Son”, “Black Eyed Boy” and “Inner Smile”.
Preserved from a BASF Betamax videotape recording, this interview offers viewers the chance to revisit an early television appearance by two key members of Texas. Recordings like this help preserve the history of Scottish music, vintage television programmes and the artists who became household names in the years that followed.
