How can Voyager 1 outlive Earth? This space documentary follows NASA’s Voyager spacecraft into interstellar space and the far future—after its last signal, after the Sun becomes a red giant, and towards one trillion years.
How long will Voyager 1 last? What happens when it runs out of power? And where will it go after it can no longer contact Earth? We explore the difference between the end of the Voyager mission and the much longer journey of the spacecraft itself.
From the Pale Blue Dot photograph to the Voyager Golden Record, this is a journey through the evidence humanity could leave behind. Using NASA mission research, archive imagery and scientific visualisations, we follow Voyager beyond the heliosphere, through the Oort Cloud and around the Milky Way. Leaving the Sun’s protective bubble is only the beginning of leaving the solar system.
Along the way, we examine:
Voyager 1’s radio signal and NASA’s Deep Space Network
Its future encounters with other stars and why its exact route becomes uncertain
The future of Earth as the Sun grows hotter and eventually becomes a red giant
How interstellar dust and radiation could damage the spacecraft and its Golden Record
What might remain after billions of years—and what science can and cannot say about one trillion years
Could a fragment of a spacecraft survive longer than the planet that built it? Surviving material is not the same as a working probe or a readable message. This astronomy documentary explores that distinction, from the end of communication to the long-term fate of Voyager.
