Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around eight miles southeast of Worcester, is the town of Pershore. In 689 AD Pershore Abbey was founded, and subsequently refounded in 972 AD as a Benedictine monastery. The Normans rebuilt the abbey, with work concluding by 1130. In 1223 a fire destroyed much of the edifice, which would later be rebuilt. Following the Reformation, the abbey would become the town's parish church, showcasing a mix of architectural styles, including Norman, Early English and Decorated Gothic, along with some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed. Owing to its geographic location, Pershore once had a thriving coaching industry, serving stagecoach passengers travelling along the London to Worcester road prior to the coming of the railways. This accounts in part for the high concentration of Georgian buildings seen in the town centre. In 1852 the railway arrived in Pershore courtesy of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. The station of today forms part of the Cotswold Line which runs between Oxford and Hereford. In 1964 the Council for British Archaeology included Pershore in its list of 51 British “Gem Towns” worthy of special consideration for historic preservation. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
