A “shuddhikaran yajna” was performed at Haldwani’s Ramlila Maidan after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge addressed a political rally there. Congress leaders allege that the venue was “purified” because Kharge is a Dalit. The organisers deny any caste motive and maintain that the ritual was conducted after cleaning the venue and to restore its religious and cultural sanctity. Haldwani Police have now registered an FIR against unknown persons under Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and Sections 196 and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The allegations remain under investigation and have not been judicially established.
