As you already know, FACIALTEAM is a surgical group dedicated to facial feminization surgery. Today I am going to tell you about the importance of the 3D CT scan in our work routine. CAT (CT scan) is the abbreviation of Computerized Axial Tomography, which is a test, a diagnostic tool that allows us to see the anatomy of our patients to the millimeter. The anatomy related to the face, or facial bone anatomy, is undoubtedly important for us to take into consideration given the type of surgery we perform. Thanks to the latest technology, today we work with instruments that only emit very low radiation doses, which is a great advantage for our patients. The CT scan is taken in this aparatus that you can see here behind me. The patient lies down while the acquisition of images takes place within the ring. The test takes no longer than 2 or 3 minutes, so in a short time we can obtain all the images needed, through the computer software, for the 3D reconstruction of the skull. It is a test that does not require any type of contrast. Who should undergo a CT scan? Any patient who is going to have facial bone contouring surgery or any patient who needs or wishes to understand which features of their face are masculine and therefore should be modified. When do we perform this test? In our work routine, always prior to the surgery because it allows us to plan surgery, it allows us to understand which structures have to be modified, allows us a better communication with our patients, allows us to tell you what work is going to be done. Also in our work routine we do it after the surgery. Why? Because this way we can perceive what surgery actually was done on the bone skeleton which also permits for a comparison of the differences before and after. We also perform this test on any patient who comes to our clinic for the first time. Why do we do CT scans? Why do we need it ? Understanding the shape, size and volume of the skeleton of our patients will allow us to understand which facial features determine the gender and therefore, identify those that should be modified with surgery in order to change the male shape into a feminine one. Undoubtedly, this protocol signifies, from our point of view, a real revolution in our surgical approach, in the planification of surgeries. Nowadays we are working with 3D printing, we are creating anatomical models of our patients to: better visualize the anatomy, and therefore plan surgery with accuracy. In addition, we can carry out a trial surgery on the model in advance of the actual procedure. With this planning, we can more faithfully reproduce quality results in a more effective manner. That equates in a much smaller margin of error. At the same time, we are utilizing 3D software for computerized planning before its time to operate in the theatre.
