A guest reads your table before they say a word, and almost none of what they notice has to do with the food. Charles Ashworth walks the Thanksgiving table the way a guest experiences it, and shows the quiet old-house habits that make a room feel looked after for almost nothing.
Keep the candle flame out of the eye line and the wax unscented. Give each person about two feet of table edge instead of cramming in one more chair. Press the cloth instead of buying a new one. Lay the silver in the order it gets used, forks on the left, knives and spoons on the right with the blades turned in. Keep the serving dishes off the table with a sideboard, side table, or a cleared counter. Serve from the left, clear from the right, and let your napkin cue the meal.
He also covers the plain food-safety timing from the USDA so the evening is not held hostage by the oven, and where it is actually worth spending versus where it is a waste. The things a guest reads as care are nearly free. The expensive mistakes are the ones people make trying to impress.
