Mercury is closest to the Sun. So why is Venus hotter? Follow sunlight through bright clouds, then follow the infrared energy trying to leave a massive carbon-dioxide atmosphere. Venus's surface is around 465°C. Mercury's roughly 430°C daytime highs and -180°C nighttime lows are extremes, not its global mean. We explain reflection, greenhouse absorption and emission, energy balance, atmospheric transport and pressure. Energy still escapes: the atmosphere does not create heat or bounce one ray forever. Early wet Venus is a model hypothesis, not a discovered ancient shoreline. Radar colors show elevation, not temperature. Artist concepts and original animations are identified on screen. Which surprised you more: Mercury's cold nights or Venus's bright clouds? Comment, like and subscribe to Matter Made Clear.
