In 1983, Michael Dell was a pre-med freshman at the University of Texas. Instead of studying biology, he was filling his dorm room on the 27th floor of the Dobie Center with computer parts.
He started PC's Limited in 1984 with about $1,000, upgrading and selling computers to people around Austin. By spring, the business was selling around $80,000 a month. At 19, he left college to run it full time, built it around one simple idea, selling directly to the customer, and within eight years became the youngest CEO on the Fortune 500.
In this episode of Untold Stories of Success, we look at how a teenager who took apart his first computer built one of the biggest names in tech, without ever leaving Texas.
