Winnipeg’s North End was once one of Canada’s most important immigrant neighbourhoods — a place built by working families, newcomers, factories, small shops, churches, synagogues, schools, and crowded streets full of life.
For generations, it was the heart of Winnipeg’s working class. Ukrainians, Jews, Poles, Indigenous families, and many other communities helped shape its identity, turning the North End into one of the most culturally rich neighbourhoods in the country.
But over time, the story changed.
As industries declined, poverty deepened, families moved away, buildings aged, and investment disappeared, the North End became known for something much darker: crime, gangs, addiction, violence, and one of the worst reputations in Canada.
This documentary tells the story of the North End, Winnipeg — how a proud immigrant district became a symbol of urban decline, why its problems became so severe, and how the people who live there continue to fight against a reputation the rest of the country often misunderstands.
Was the North End always dangerous? Or did decades of poverty, neglect, racism, isolation, and political failure help create the neighbourhood Canada came to fear?
A story of immigration, working-class pride, community, decline, violence, survival, and a neighbourhood that refuses to disappear.
