Every unit had a guy who knew things. A snake that kills you before your third step. Apes that threw rocks at Marines. A radio voice from Hanoi who knew your name.
In this countdown we take 16 legends Vietnam grunts swore by and check every one of them against the record, with an old grunt remembering what it felt like to believe them: the "F-U lizard" (true), the two-step snake (the Army recorded one U.S. snakebite death), rock apes (real monkeys, bigger legend), the tigers that took Marines (sadly true), gunships and elephants, the "people sniffer" machine, formaldehyde in "33" beer (no evidence), the ace of spades, Hanoi Hannah, the ghost tape of Operation Wandering Soul, "the night belongs to Charlie", Puff the Magic Dragon, the Chinese up north, the 16-minute lieutenant, "it's just weed killer", and the short-timer curse.
What legend did your unit believe? Was it true? Tell us below with your unit and your year.
