পিতৃগৃহে পতি শিবের ঘোর অপমান সহ্য করতে না পেরে, দক্ষযজ্ঞের অগ্নি কুণ্ডে নিজের প্রাণ বিসর্জন দেন দেবী সতী। সতীর এই আকস্মিক ও মর্মান্তিক প্রয়াণের সংবাদ যখন কৈলাসে পৌঁছায়, তখন দেবাদিদেব মহাদেব শোকে ও ক্রোধে উন্মত্ত হয়ে ওঠেন। মহাবিশ্বের পরম শান্ত রূপ নিমেষের মধ্যে ধারণ করে রুদ্র রূপ। শিবের জটাজাল থেকে সৃষ্টি হয় বীরভদ্র ও মহাকালী, যাঁরা মুহূর্তের মধ্যে ধ্বংস করে দেন প্রজাপতি দক্ষের অহংকারী যজ্ঞশালা। কিন্তু মহাদেবের ভেতরের সেই মহাশোক ও ক্রোধ শান্ত হয় না। সতীর নিথর দেহ কাঁধে তুলে নিয়ে তিনি শুরু করেন এক প্রলয়ংকরী নৃত্য—শিব তাণ্ডব Unable to bear the grave insult to her husband Shiva at her father's house, Goddess Sati sacrificed her life in the sacrificial fire pit of the Daksha Yajna.
