Actual Fates of Lufthansa Heist victims.
Goodfellas ends Jimmy's story on a card, a prison sentence and a parole year, and everybody walks out thinking the Lufthansa story was settled in a montage. That's exactly what the montage wanted you to think.
It wasn't settled. Not for anyone around that money.
Who was really frozen in that meat truck, and why had the man the film named Frankie Carbone still got five years left to live? If Tommy couldn't have finished Morrie, who did? Why were Frenchy and Joe Buddha found on the very night the only man ever convicted was convicted? What happened to Johnny Roastbeef and his wife after they drove off in that Cadillac, and why did nobody ever find them? And Jimmy's card. What did that parole year actually turn into?
Ten entries. Fourteen men in total. By the end you'll know how many of those endings the movie got right, and how many of those deaths were really about the money. Neither number is what you're expecting.
In this video:
Angelo Sepe (Frankie Carbone)
Richard Eaton (the man in the trailer)
Martin Krugman (Morrie)
Parnell "Stacks" Edwards
Robert McMahon and Joseph Manri (Frenchy and Joe Buddha)
Louis and Joanna Cafora (Johnny Roastbeef and his wife)
Tommy DeSimone
The man on the money trail
Another family's man
The man believed to have given the orders
Keep both counts as you watch, and tell me in the comments what yours were before the recount.
Sources include People v. Burke (the 1985 Eaton conviction), US v. Asaro (EDNY, 2014 to 2015) and the Justice Department's releases on that case, the 1979 Werner trial, contemporaneous reporting from the New York Times, Daily News and UPI, retired FBI supervisor Steve Carbone's 2014 NPR interview, and the books The Heist by Ernest Volkman and John Cummings and The Big Heist by Anthony DeStefano. Many of the killer accounts come from Henry Hill alone; the video attributes them to him every time. Where witnesses disagree, the video says so.
