Narration: It was pouring rain, and the railway station was teeming with crowds. Some were struggling to manage their umbrellas, while others were rushing under the tin shed to escape the downpour. Amidst the splashing of rainwater and the noise of train whistles, Devki and Vedika were selling tea and samosas from a cart set up under a tarpaulin sheet in a corner of the station. A large crowd of customers had gathered around the cart; people stood under the shelter, enjoying their tea and samosas and singing praises of the food.
Vishal (26) (Sipping tea with eyes closed): "Wow, *Behenji*... what tea you’ve made! There is real joy in drinking ginger tea like this during the rainy season. It’s washed away all my fatigue."
Rahul (36) (Taking a large bite of a *samosa*, steam escaping his mouth): "And these *samosas*... the outer crust is so crispy, and the potato filling inside—uff—absolutely spicy and delicious! You did a great thing by opening your shop here at the railway station, *Behenji*; otherwise, one couldn't find anything good to eat here before."
Devki (55) (Smiling): "Sir, this is all the magic of my daughter-in-law's hands... she is less of a daughter-in-law to me..." "She is the very embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi in our home; it is thanks to her initiative and foresight that we started this venture..."
Vedika (25) (lifting samosas out of the hot oil; a hint of hesitation on her face, yet smiling): "Ma-ji, the credit doesn't belong to me alone; you have supported me every step of the way. If you hadn't been there, how could I have managed all this?"
Devki (55) (getting emotional): "Child, what happened to you... if it had happened to any other girl, she would have severed ties with us and left long ago. But you stood by us. I am so lucky to have a daughter-in-law like you."
Narration: Just as Devki says this, her attention is drawn to a young man and woman who are boarding a train...
Devki (55) (to herself): "What are they doing here? It is because of them that we are facing such days—forced to sell tea and samosas at the railway station in the pouring rain..."
Narration: What exactly had happened to Vedika? Who were this young man and woman, and what had they done? Why have a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law from a respectable household ended up selling tea and samosas at a railway station in the pouring rain? What is the story behind this? To find out, let’s travel back a few months...
Narration: It was the month of Sawan (monsoon season)... an unseasonal rain was falling in the evening... Water was leaking from the roof in various spots in Vedika's home... Vedika was wiping up the rainwater; her sister-in-law, Kumkum, was studying; and her in-laws were chatting with each other. Just then...
Kumkum (22) (Looking up from her books and glancing at the rain outside): *Bhabhi*, look how pleasant the weather is outside... I really feel like eating something delicious and spicy... Please, make something for us...
Devki (55) (Happily): Yes, Bahu*, the weather is truly wonderful... I feel like having something tasty too... Here’s an idea: why don't you make some nice tea and *pakodas (fritters)?
Govind (60) (Reading the newspaper, his glasses perched on his nose): Oh, my dear... we had pakodas just the day before yesterday... I really don't feel like having them again... If you're going to make something, why not make something else? Something spicy and tangy...
Vedika (25) (Smiling as she steps out of the kitchen): Oh, don't you worry... Today, I'll make my special samosas along with piping hot tea for everyone...
Devki (55) (Happily): You don't even need to ask... make them quickly, *Bahu*...
Narration: Vedika goes into the kitchen... She mixes all-purpose flour (*maida*), carom seeds (*ajwain*), a little oil, and salt in a bowl to knead a firm dough... In a pan, she heats some oil and sautés cumin seeds, whole coriander seeds, green chilies, ginger, and a blend of spices with potatoes to prepare a delicious samosa filling... She stuffs this mixture into the dough to shape the samosas, and then... She puts the tea on to boil in a pot; the entire house fills with the aroma of samosas and tea... everyone is sitting on a mat, happily enjoying the samosas.
