rural life in vietnam is mostly small work done by hand, and this is one ordinary morning of it. the wax apple tree by the house has finally come in, so the first job is to pick it. cuong climbs onto the tin roof with a long bamboo pole and a small net on the end, oanh steadies the branches from below, and the children run the baskets down to the yard. there is far more fruit than five people can eat, so the neighbours take the rest — that sharing is a normal part of rural life in vietnam.
on the way home there is cold sugarcane juice, pressed by hand while you wait. then the kitchen. lunch here is never one quick dish. pork is minced by hand on a wooden block, mixed with fresh herbs, rolled in wild betel leaves and pan-fried. another pot braises dark and slow with eggs, with a light soup and rice. oanh cooks the way her mother did, tasting as she goes. this is the unhurried side of rural life in vietnam.
when it is ready the whole family sits down together. dau and bi fill their bowls twice; hong xiem eats slowly, in her own time. it is a long lunch and no one hurries it.
