HISHERSTORY — JAMAICAN: THE FREEDOM JOURNEY
Before the flags, before colonization, Jamaica was Xaymaca, home to Indigenous Taíno communities with their own culture, traditions, and way of life. From European conquest and African enslavement to the courageous resistance of the Maroons, Nanny, Sam Sharpe, and Paul Bogle, Jamaica's history became a powerful journey of survival, struggle, and determination. Emancipation in 1838, the labor movements, Marcus Garvey's message of self-determination, and independence in 1962 helped shape a proud nation whose reggae, dancehall, language, and culture would influence the entire world. Today, Jamaica's freedom journey continues through its people, at home and across the diaspora, as each generation inherits the wisdom of the past and takes responsibility for the future. *Remember the pain. Retrieve the wisdom. Take the action. Build the freedom. One Humanity. One Movement. World Peace Through One Love.*
