Japan Airlines • All Nippon Airways : Flying from Tokyo to Sapporo & Hakodate to Tokyo

I was excited to travel aboard Japan's two largest airlines. And on top of that, it was great to fly on the Boeing 767 after 12 years. So let's see how these rare beauties have fared over time. 20 December 2023 The first flight was my first time on Japan Airlines, flying aboard their 19 years old Boeing 767-300ER, JA610J. This particular variant had no winglets which made it one of the rarest in the world. Those without winglets would only fly domestic routes across Japan. Getting to Haneda Airport was pretty easy with the use of the monorail and Tokyo's complex yet convenient metro system. Since Japan Airlines operated out of Terminal 1, it didn't take long to find the kiosks. We checked in and proceeded through security before getting some breakfast in the departures area. There were plenty of wide-body aircraft even though these domestic flights are roughly one to two hours. It just goes to show how many people still prefer flying over the bullet trains. Soon after, boarding commenced at Gate 12 and I settled in Seat 37K. The cabin was quite outdated but at least the crew were friendly with their stellar Japanese customer service. After the welcoming announcements were made, we pushed back and taxied to the runway before taking off towards Sapporo. Refreshments were served as a selection of beverages. I gazed out to watch the scenery go by and before I knew it, the flight was beginning to descend. We landed at New Chitose Airport and parked at Gate 11. After disembarking, we collected our bags from Carousel A and went to the train station so we could travel to the city. Duration: 1 Hour 25 Minutes 22 December 2023 The second flight was my first time on All Nippon Airways, flying aboard their 16 years old Boeing 767-300ER, JA615A. Like the previous flight, this particular variant had no winglets which made it one of the rarest in the world. Those without winglets would only fly domestic routes across Japan. Hakodate Airport had no train station so the most convenient way to travel there was to ride a taxi. But once we got there, it was a hassle-free experience as the friendly staff welcomed us when we checked in. The airport wasn't that large but there was a lookout area upstairs. The snow across the area was a beautiful sight, and I was amazed at the level of servitude the staff had towards everything they do. I got to witness my plane touch down before going through security and await boarding at Gate 4. Once aboard, I settled in Seat 8A which had a terrific view of the engine. The cabin felt rather old but had a lot of charm and nostalgia. After the announcements were made, and the de-icing was completed, we pushed back and taxied to the runway before taking off towards Tokyo. The takeoff was absolutely stunning and it was quite cool seeing the cone of the engine gradually become covered with snow. Refreshments were served and I revisited one of my favourite shows, "Good Luck!!" which focused on a fictional crew that worked for ANA. It's (in my opinion) one of the best aviation-related shows out there and really entertaining from start to finish, so I highly recommend it! We were getting closer to our destination and not long after, we promptly touched down at Haneda Airport. We taxied to Gate 68 at Terminal 2 before we disembarked collected our bags at Carousel 9. ANA was a pleasant airline to fly with but didn't really feel any different to JAL. I think I would have to fly with them internationally to experience any major differences.
