Endowment Effect: Helping Clients Let Go of Financial Attachments
Why do clients hold onto a home, concentrated stock position, inherited portfolio, or other financial asset even when the numbers suggest it may be time to let go?
The endowment effect is a cognitive bias that can cause us to place greater value on something simply because we own it. In financial planning, that attachment can make otherwise logical decisions surprisingly difficult.
In this episode, Ashley Quamme and Dr. Meghaan Lurtz explore how the endowment effect shows up in client conversations and what financial advisors can do when more data, another scenario, or simply explaining the bias isn’t enough.
They unpack the psychology behind financial attachment, including loss aversion, psychological ownership, and anchoring, and share practical, research-informed ways advisors can help clients consider change without dismissing the meaning behind what they own.
You’ll learn how to:
Recognize the endowment effect in real estate, concentrated stock positions, inherited portfolios, and other financial assets
Understand how loss aversion, ownership, and anchoring can influence financial decisions
Avoid relying on logic or education alone when clients feel emotionally attached to an asset
Use future-self questions to help clients imagine what life could look like after a difficult decision
Preserve meaningful memories through mementos without preserving the entire asset
Ask questions that uncover what a client is really trying to protect
Use market data and outside experts without becoming the person pushing the client to sell
Bring empathy and emotional context into decisions that may look purely financial on the surface
Helping clients let go isn’t about convincing them to make a specific decision. It’s about understanding what the asset represents, making room for the emotions involved, and helping clients explore their options from a different perspective.
