The U.S. military fed millions of young men three times a day, in the jungle, the desert and at sea, with food that couldn't spoil. By the time the MRE replaced the old canned rations in 1981, that food had already moved into the American kitchen. Fifteen things GIs ate, from the mess hall line to the C-ration can: SOS, Spam, the K-ration, a chocolate bar built to taste only a little better than a boiled potato, 1,604 tons of turkey shipped to France for Thanksgiving 1944, and the frozen dinner that flew on Navy planes before it became the TV dinner.
