Watch the inaugural keynote delivered by Shri. Deepak Goel (DDG, NIC & Senior Director, MeitY) at the Safe Human Future Community Launch Event at Shangri-La Eros, New Delhi.
In this address, Deepak Goel outlines the vital bridge between legal policy and software engineering, highlighting why real-world AI governance requires embedding compliance and safeguards directly into system architectures. Drawing from India's experience building population-scale Digital Public Infrastructure like Aadhaar and UPI, as well as the implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) framework, this session breaks down how technologists and policymakers can convert abstract Responsible AI principles into executable, auditable code across the entire data and model lifecycle.
Key Discussion Highlights:Technology as a Caring Enabler: Why legal frameworks provide direction, but robust technical implementations are what genuinely protect individuals and society. Systemic Risk at Population Scale: Addressing adaptive, difficult-to-detect risks across critical sectors including identity verification, credit scoring, welfare delivery, and healthcare. Beyond Regulation to Embedded Architecture: Transitioning from static compliance checklists to Responsible AI by Design built into engineering specifications. Lifecycle DPDP Obligations: Enforcing statutory mandates—such as consent, purpose limitation, data minimization, and auditability—from model training and inference through system retirement. Architectural Safeguards in Practice: A real-world case study on mandating non-bypassable system logging at the OS orchestration level to guarantee verifiable audit trails. Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs): Utilizing federated learning, differential privacy, secure multi-party computation, and synthetic data to maintain analytical utility without exposing personal data. Lessons from Digital Public Infrastructure: Leveraging India's proven track record with Aadhaar and UPI to build trusted reference architectures for AI.
